Question:Hi I have 3 questions about french horn. Ive been playing for 6 years.
1) I play flute, too and I was wondering if it is possible to play viabrato on French horn.
2) Is a Conn better than a Holton
3)I want your opinion on this: I like the tone and look more of a silver horn more than a gold or rose brass horn. I think it better "high lights" my dark tone. What do you think of this and do you think it is true? What material do you perfer?

1. Vibrato is possible on any brass instrument, but the way it is done is a lot different when compared to flute. For a brass musician, your vibrato comes from a slight open/close motion... kind of like chewing. Make sure you do it in a manner that is measured and even.
2. Both Conn and Holton have great reputations. Both horns play extremely well. What it boils down to is the wrap of the tubing and the spread/height of the valves. A Holton generally has a more open wrap and a shorter valve action versus the more typical conn wrap and standard valve action. Basically, it depends on what the player prefers.
3. Silver definitely helps to darken your tone. Rose brass does as well, but not as much as the Silver. And I prefer the Rose on Horn and Trombone.

ok well i sadly dont play f.horn anymore, i wish i did. i played it for..4 years i believe.
and the only one i can really answer is 3. i always thought i played better with a silver horn too. i dont know why, but i did.
i love the french horn, wish i still played it. good choice in intrument!!

Yes you can play vibrato on the French horn but it has never been called for in my experience, and kind of goes against the grain in terms of the concept of the French Horn.

Brand very often comes down to personnel choice.

Same answer for your last question. If you prefer it - go with it.
