Position:Home>Performing Arts> Transposing notes for a Bb clarinet?

Question:for temple, we have this program where the students are playing music. everyone else is playing piano, guitar, or flute, so i have to transpose my notes for my Bb clarinet to fit a piano or a flute.

the songs have two sharps, one sharp, one flat, no sharps or flats, and three sharps.

i just need to know like how many notes up i need to put my music. could you tell me what a 'c' or a 'b' would be in that key signature.

thanks!

You need to transpose your clarinet music all up one note. For instance, if the note is on a line, you need move it to the space above that line. If it is in the space, then you have to move it to the line above that space.

You then need to change the keys to these, (respective to the ones you listed)

For the song with 2 #'s, Change to 4 #'s (F C G D)

For the song with 1 #, Change to 3 #'s (F C G)

For the song with 1 flat, Change to 1 # (F)

For the song with no #'s or flats, Change to 2 #'s (F C)

For the song with 3 #'s, Change to 5 #'s (F C G D A)

By moving the notes up one spot, and changing the keys as I mentioned, you will have transposed the parts up 1 Whole step. They should then sound correct with the other instruments.

Good Luck!

wow laura that steve person knows how to play a clarinet, lol!!! i have no idea how to transpose music but good luck!!! i would apreciate a best answer.

You need to transpose your music up one tone. If they Flutes are playing C you need to play D. The general rule is

If the original music has sharps in the key signiture e.g D Maj then add 2 sharps. so D major would be E major

If the music has flats e.g Eb Then you need to take away 2 flats So Eb Major would be F Major for Clarinets

So: The 2# song (D major) would be E major for you (4 #'s)
The 1 # song (G major) would be A major (3#'s)
The 1b song (F major) would be G major (1#)
no #'s or b's (C major) would be D major for you (2#'s)
The 3# song (A major) would be B Major for you (5#'s)

Of course instead of major the songs could be in their alt minor key!
