I am also a teacher of vocal music. Whoever told you THAT is crazy. Seventeen might be too YOUNG - you need a good solid background of vocal technique before you can tackle the demands of operatic singing. Find a REALLY GOOD teacher who can help you - do put you down.

mamianka is right- 17 is just starting age for most of us. If someone has told you otherwise, then they are not the teacher you or anyone else needs.
Most vocal teachers like to make sure that a young person has finished their growth. the vocal apparatus also grows during puberty ( the men have the most obvious changes), and letting a larynx or voice box get settled is a necessity.
It's not weight training per se, but the number of "reps" that the vocal muscles go through in learning their craft would make a weight lifter blink.
Thank you, mamianka for your well-considered reply.
There are too many quacks still out there, roping in young people who wouldn't know how to tell the difference.
I was one such, and had to spend a great deal of time un-learning new bad habits when I was in my late teens. One reason I like this forum.: I get a chance to send out some correct information.
Best wishes and keep on singing
