Position:Home>Performing Arts> Will singing lessons drastically improve the quality of my voice?

Question:I'm 14, and a rather good singer. I sing all types of musical theatre and I have a good belting range, but I really want to take that extra step forward and get a professional singing coach. My dad said it's okay with him, but before I go spending my parents money, do you think that by taking lessons I'll be a better belter, better breath support, etc.? I've been taking piano lessons since I was 5, so reading music is no problem for me. But do you think singing lessons will all around improve the quality of my voice? Thanks in advance! :)

Egad, professional singer (above) knows nothing about the potential for improvement of the voice--particularly for a young singer like yourself.

But note that we're not talking short-term improvement. A lot of vocal quality must develop with time and maturity. The benefits from voice lessons come from:

(A) Proper instruction in breath support, tone production, placement and articulation--VERY IMPORTANT! Self-taught singers often produce tone incorrectly, and if they become professionals they are prone to vocal fatigue and injury. It's a little-known secret that record labels, when they have a hot new "content provider" that they want to develop, generally go out and get a voice coach for the singer--and when they don't vocal nodules, vocal strain, or tears of the vocal folds often follow.

(B) Long-term effects. If you don't get lessons, your voice at age 26 may be better--if you get lessons, it could be twice as much better.

Based on what you've written, I'd recommend that you look into any pre-college or academy programs at the music school of a nearby major college or university. You have the foundation of a terrific career.

Yes, if you can afford it. Why? You are certain that, if the teacher has any respect, will teach you properly so as not to damage your vocal chord.
Celine Dion, is my neighbor In montreal, Canada and she took lessons a while back to improve her range. And she couldn't believe how much it made a difference in her high notes.

Of COURSE lessons will help you. You're receiving guidance from a trained professional who will guide you with the correct techniques in improving your voice.
However, you have to be willing to work and do what they ask you, otherwise it will be a waste.

As as professional singer, I do not believe a singing coach can drastically improve your voice. A singing coach can only teach you how to more effectively utilize the voice you have and teach you how to control your voice. For example, if you have a two octave voice range, the best coach in the world is not going to increase your range to a three octave range. A good voice coach can also help you develop your own style of singing. Most young singers, instead of focusing on developing their own style, do nothing but imitate famous singers.
