Position:Home>Performing Arts> How to prepare for music performance major?

Question:I posted this question in the Higher Education section, but got no answers from it. Hopefully I can get better luck here.

I'm a high school sophomore and was just wondering what I could do to prepare for a music performance major. I am currently in the band and marching band at my high school, playing flute. Are there any other classes I should look in to taking, or am I good with what I have?

Piano lessons are always a good idea.
Private lessons, a must, as soon as possible.
Get a "Portfolio" of performance pieces together that you can play at request.
Try putting together a recital for your sr. year now and videotape it, but let your private teacher choose your repetoire.
Try out for all honor groups, solo contests, etc. Having a performing pedigree will let your profs know you are serious.

You must be studying privately, because the entrance auditions- especially for flutists - are really difficult. The best advice I can give you is to go to Yahoo Groups and join Flutenet - there are about 3,000 of us there, and you will get really fine advice.

There are always low-level colleges that will take you, no matter how poor your audition, as long as you can pay the tuition - I don't need to tell you to stay away from those. You degree will be worthless wen you find out after that poor education that you cannot get a job - everyone else is better qualified.
