Position:Home>Performing Arts> Where is the proper guitar picking and strumming position?

Question:I was just wondering where you are supposed pick notes and play chords at on an acoustic guitar. I have seen people pick in different places, but most either pick; over the sound hole, between the bridge and sound hole, or somewhere in the middle there. Does it matter, I know it sounds different when you play it closer to the bridge or closer to the sound hole. I just wanted to know which one is better or correct.

You've answered your own question. When doing leads that you want to be more punchy, do it closer to the bridge. For more full sounding chords, do it over the hole. For more woodiness for either chords or picking, close to the neck. It depends on the sound you're looking for. In my experience, I generally am over the hole---unless I'm looking for something different.

mm is right. There is no "proper" or "correct" position -- or I should say, they're all proper positions but each one gives you a different sound, so pick or strum wherever you want to get the sound you want.
