I started guitar 3 years ago and have had the same problems as you, so here we go. For the fingers hurting thing, they do that when you start out. By practicing a lot and just holding chords ( using 2 fingers to hold different strings) you will get used to it. Also some good websites to print out tabs (the song in guitar format so you can play it without notes) of songs you like are ultimate-guitar.com or 911tabs.com Also there are multiple begginer guitar books out there to teach you all the different things you need to know and even techniques that sound cool. But the bes thing is to just get an instructor. If their good they will teach you the basics first, and how to tune, answer all your questions about guitars, and of course teach you :) If you want to tune your guitar, dont buy those reed tuners, buy a chromatic tuner, which is way eaiser and just pluck each string, and it will tell you if you need to tune it down or up, then just twist the knobs on the head of your guitar until the pitch of that string is on the right letter. The order is E A D G B E thats what all of your strings should show up as on the tuner in order from closest knob to you.

Good question! I'm learning now as well. Practice will toughen up your finger tips. You need to build calluses there.

I have my son tune my guitar. He's in the high school band, and plays music much better than me. I think the sound of my out-of-tune guitar drove him nuts. It sounds a lot better now.

You can find a small pitch pipe at music stores. Mine has 6 different tones that match the strings on my guitar.
