Question:I need a new obsession to practise and become good at. I dont play any instruments at the moment apart from a couple of stuff on the piano but the thing is i dont want to take lessons 'd rather practise when i feel like.

Are there any instruments you can get good at just by practising and without needing a lot of teaching?

You can learn any instrument on your own if you're willing to put the time into it. I tought myself to play guitar, bass gutiar, drums, piano, banjo, ukulele, trumpet, cello, and violin.
-From my experience the easiest to learn on my own was guitar (bass guitar isnt complicated to learn easier, but not many people are as into bass as i am. however, everything thats said for the guitar is also said for bass). There are TONS of websites with pointers to help you learn, and as for music, there are a variety of guitar tabs on the internet for all sorts of music so you can always play the type you like and match your mood whether you want calm and slow for sad moods...or loud and fast for every other mood!
-If you're going to start off with any instrument though, dont buy the one thats most expensive or the one that looks the best...get a beginner instrument and then work your way up, thats where the most satisfaction will happen :) For guitar, I would start off on an acoustic guitar before you play electric. This lowers the cost because you dont have to buy an amp, cables, pedals...all that jazz.

The things you DO need to learn before playing the guitar is...
-how to tune it, whether you want to use an electric tuner or do it by ear...you'll need to have someone show you how.
-how to read tabs. Guitar tablature is simple to read and in my opinion, way less complicated than actual music and notes. I've been playing guitar for 7 years and to this day I dont know a single note. Its also easy to write if you're looking into become a writer.
-understand high tone notes come from the smaller, closer spaced frets (the spaces separated by metal rod on the wooden neck of the guitar) and low tone notes come from the larger, wider spaces frets.

I'd definately look into guitar for an instrument though, its super fun, you can play so so so so much variety with it, its easy to learn if you're willing, and its addicting. haha! Its also easy to take care of. The most expensive part of havin ga guitar is actually BUYING it. Everything else is not expensive at all: guitar picks run as low as $0.10, straps as low as $5, and strings (for when you "pop" or break them, you need to restring your whole guitar and retune in) cost as low as $10 depending on the qualtiy of everything.

lol i really dont know how much more i can stress to play the guitar. my guitars rock and i love them to death and play them all the time, i soo recommend you to play and make music!

good luck with your searching and i hope you find the instrument that best suites you :)

bass guitar is pretty easy to learn. just get a book and practice. you'll eventually become good at it.

i play guitar and i basically taught myself how to play....ive been playing for about 10 years but i admit i was pretty **** up until about age 12
my parents play so they showed me the chords and stuff but thats about it
just get a few beginners books.... if youre consistant and practice enough youll learn fast..itll help if you have someone close who can play and give you a hand though
and dont give up cuz ur fingers will probably hurt like hell!!!
xxx
also i advise ya not to start with electric....electric is easier but itll be harder then to switch to acoustic

Piano
Recorder
Xylophone/Marimba

ANY!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would sugest they guitar
violin might be too ghard with out a teacher

Piano. I do. Just listen to a piece of music and try and play the tune, hm the tune and find the relevent notes. form there on just play around with chords that will fit. The more you do it the better you get. try more complicated chords and tunes for a chalenge.
