Question:I want to start playing the guitar, so I was wondering what's a good beginner's electric guitar? And should I get one with or without a whammy bar?

ha, I'm actually going through the same thing right now. Depending on how committed you are there are different ones you might want to choose. If you aren't that sure about whether you're actually going to be committed to the guitar you might want to just go with a cheap squier starter set, but this is hardly anything of quality. You can get the guitar alone for as low as $100

A good step up would be a Mexican made Fender Stratocaster. From what I hear, it still has some semi-good quality, and is pretty versatile in what kind of music sounds good on it. This is what I'm personally buying as my first electric guitar. The cheapest it seems to run is about $400, but many people have recommended it to me as a good begginers guitar.

Hope that helps =)

Get a set. Like an Ibanez starter pack etc. Move on from there.

Whammy bars aren't necessary for starters. Good luck, mate.

Not sure if they are available in U.S but the yamaha pacifica is an excellent guitar. My friend bought one when he was starting out and it easily matched the tonal quality and resonance of the American Fender Stratocaster i had at the time.
There are a number of decent cheap guitars on the market now. cheap Ibanez's are pretty good and easy to play, The dean evo (musicians friend) is classy looking and has good action. I would avoid squiers and epiphones as both can be pretty hit and miss. The best way thing to do would be to head to your local guitar shop and get a feel for the model you like. There is 2 or 3 basic guitar shapes in the beginner range, find which one suits you best and go for it. As far as whammy bars go, unless you are planning on playing hendrix, surf music or some shred metal they aren't really that important. I had an Ibanez with a whammy which i used to unscrew because i never used it and it got in the way.
Good luck finding the right guitar and learning to play it. Rock on.

Fender Squire

Dean Playmate. you can also buy a cheap Orange Crush amp while your at it. the guitar is about 120 and the amp bout 80

get a squire, those are good beginner guitars

Hey, im doing the same as you, ie wanting to learn the guitar lol. Im 16 and live in the UK, so no dollars or anything. I was wondering if this epiphone would be a decent starter guitar, or something like it as i have heard that that guitar is fairly decent for a beginner.

I wont buy that exact one, i'll search around a little to see if i can find any decent packages and what not.
Other suggestions are gladly welcome as is the rest of your knowledge :)
