yes...the punjab lasso that erik (the phantom) aquired during his stay in persia. if you keep your hands up, there is a chance that you can prevent the lasso from totally strangling you, you could either catch it or hold it away from your neck a little so that like i said, it doesn't totally choke you. Madame Giry has seen this first hand in the movie, she watched on as a younger Erik strangled the gypsy man that held him in the cage as a fair attraction. You also see Joseph Buquet and Ubaldo Piangi meet their death by this thin snakelike weapon.

I love that book...I read it in 8th grade. I can't remember about the eye thing though, sorry!

it's because the phantom uses something called the punjab lasso to strangle people and if you have your hand at the level of your eyes, you can pull it off of your head before he can kill you. i love the phantom!

If you hold your hand to the level of your eyes you won't be able to see the Phantom's face. if you see his face then he'll kill you. And the Phantom's favorite weapon of choice is a rope that used to hang people tied in a fashion called the punjab lasso. that wraps around the throat and chokes the person to death. if your hand is up, you have a better chance of surviving because you'll have a chance to escape.
