Position:Home>Performing Arts> Guitar trouble.i have small hands...(read on).PLEASE HELP!??!?

Question:ok, i'm a beginner(got a guitar for christmas)
and it came with a dvd, i'm trying to play the chords.
but on some of them your not supposed to play the string at the top, the thick one.so i asked a question on here i think like 2 days ago at they said to make it not play, (like when you strum the strings) just barely hold it with your thumb or the closest finger, well,
a)there's not always a closest finger and
b)my hand when i curve it around to make the thumb go up there makes my hand touch the smallest string at the bottom,
so neither of those things work...
WHAT SHOULD I DO???
i don't know....PLEAASSEE HELP MEE!!!

Practice, practice, practice.

Even if you have small hands, you can learn to play guitar; you just have to learn to stretch your fingers to reach the chord fingerings -- and that only comes from practice. You only **just** got your guitar a week ago, why are you so panicked and upset? Did you really think it was going to be **that** easy?

If you're playing a chord where you don't want the low E string to sound (the thickest one -- which is on the "bottom" -- the thinnest high string is the "top" string) -- just don't strum it. Easy, right? That requires you to develop some precision with your strumming hand, and that is developed with -- you guessed it -- PRACTICE.

Throw that DVD out the window.
Make sure your guitar is in tune. Buy some tablature books of your favorite bands. Read the instructions. Believe me, you'll start playing soon....
It's very difficult to learn music that you aren't interested in.

Dont worry about muting that top string, just practice playing the chords. In time you will be able to play without hitting the top or even looking at the strings. enjoy it a have fun.

guitar method...by e media.......excellent tutor and play along

Chords can be played in many positions. Try the one that's easiest for you right now. With practice, it will become easier.
This might help.

It'll take practice an patience to hit all the strings precisely. And as for learning, take lessons. They work much better. Instructional books, dvds, etc. can ruin your will to learn the guitar. Trust me. I've seen it happen.
