Position:Home>Performing Arts> My lips get tired VERY quickly when playing oboe?

Question:i've been playing for about a week but i'm still having problems in that my lips tire really quickly so i can't really play much of anything for too long.
I was thinking it might be my embrouchure.
Can someone help me with oboe embrouchure?

That's pretty normal for just playing for a week.
You aren't going to have a fully developed embouchure for some time, especially with a double reed instrument like the oboe.
Just keep practicing, don't over-do it, and don't let it discourage you.

Whats oboe?

Just play often...after a while you'll be a pro! Good luck. :)

That's normal. Don't expect to play marathon practices! Instead, divide them up into several 10-minute increments. Before you know it, your embouchure will be rock-solid.

There are actually 2 styles of oboe embouchure. Are you using the European (more of an "o" shape) or American (closer to a clarinet or "wider" shape)? Ask your oboe teacher about the 2 styles and the difference that makes in the "color" of the tone you will produce. Perhaps one will work better for you than the other. In time the tiny muscles around your mouth will get stronger and you won't get tired lips as quickly. As a new player you might want to split your practice time into 2 or 3 sessions per day. For instance: don't practice just 1 time for 30 mins... practice 3 times for just 10 minutes at a time. That seems to work for mose new players.
