Acoustic is a little harder to play than an electric but it will help with your technique and you can use an acoustic anywhere.

Best advice is to go to the music store and hold and strum all the guitars you can in your price range. Buy the one that feels and sounds the best. Hopefully you can get someone who knows how to play to come with you.

Go online and find a bunch in your price range and write down or print out the make and model numbers. (The store prices will be higher usually) You can use the paper to take notes about what you played and whether you liked it or not.

I wouldn't go too much below $250 for a beginning guitar. You shouldn't have to pay more than $350. Your first guitar doesn't need to be the most beautiful or have the most features. You want to make sure it feels and sounds decent to you. That way it will keep you motivated to keep practicing.

Guitar Center and Sam Ash also have online sites. Of course it may be good to support the local community and try to check out some local stores. Look in the yellow pages of your phone book for musical instruments.

Guitar for Dummies is a good book for teaching yourself. Wholenote.com is a good web site with all kinds of guitar lessons and articles. There are free lessons on youtube also.

Good Luck.

The acoustic is the perfect guitar to start with! It is a little harder to play than an electric guitar but it is worth the extra effort. You can spend anywhere from $50.00 to hundreds even thousands. If you are serious then spend as much as you can afford!

Guitar isn't difficult to learn, but you have to be willing to put in the time to practice on a regular basis. You can't expect to get good at it unless you play every day -- not necessarily for hours on end every day, but at least 15 minutes every day.

I recommend learning on an acoustic before attempting electric. Electric guitar isn't more difficult, but if you start on an electric you'll have a tougher time trying to play an acoustic because an electric really is easier to play. Besides, if you start on an acoustic you won't need to invest extra money in an amplifier.

Acoustic guitars range widely in price. While it is true that the more expensive guitars are generally better in terms of sound, feel, and wood quality, you can get a very good starter guitar for under $300.00. Here are some brand names I would recommend for a beginner:

Fender
Yamaha
Washburn
Jasmine
Ibanez

Here's another tip: Some of the guitar manufacturers sell "starter packs" where you get a guitar, a case or gig bag, and maybe some other goodies like picks, a strap, a tuner, extra sets of strings, and maybe even a beginner's guitar lesson book. Check out the following website to find great deals on acoustic guitars and starter packs:
