You do not have to learn the acoustic guitar first and it is actually harder to play the acoustic guitar-the electric is easier.

Great guitars for beginners:
Epiphone
Wasburn
Guild
Fender

Guitars with humbucker pickups give a more full and rich sound, guitars with single coil pickups give more of a light and clean, less distorted sound.
Guitars with rosewood fretboards give a more woody and smokey sound, guitars with maple boards give a brighter sound.

When you but your first guitar, instead of buying a new one that looks nice, buy a second hand one, you will get more for your money. As for amplifiers, make sure you get a tube amplifier and not a solid state amp. Tube amps use valves for the sound and give better tone, solid state amps use transistors and give a less warm tone.

Good amps for beginners:

Laney LC15 or LC15r
Laney VC15
Epiphone valve special
Fender pro junior

Hope this helps.

a electric guitar is the most fun one to play, but quite hard, the acoustic guitar it easier but you cant do as much with it. I first played acoustic and didn't find it very fun, but when I started to learn electric it was more fun.

You DO NOT have to learn acoustic first. i learned electric first and im good.

You dont HAVE to learn in any particular order, most people just start w/ acoustic because they are cheaper, and once you learn on acoustic electric is a cake walk, acoustics have thicker necks, less frets, and the strings are a little tougher to press, great for building up calluses. I would start out w/ a squire strat (made by fender) they have a good sound, are wallet friendly, and are pretty much identical to a fender strat, minus a few details. Check out your local used instrument stores to see what kind of deals they have, everyone likes different things, personally i like yamaha acoustics, marshall amps, DOD pedals, and fender or gibson electrics.

Your friend was wrong.

Play what appeals to you.

It's perfectly acceptable, and far more more fun and motivating to learn in the style you like best.

You can learn the basics on any guitar, and it'll only be easier when you want to expand to styles.

you do NOT have to learn the acoustic first, or at all. That is a myth. I know, because I took up the electric guitar two years ago. I have been playing piano 40 years. I was told the same thing. To make it short, electric guitars in my opinion are BETTER than acoustics, because they can do all an acoustic can do, but they can do many things an acoustic can't do. They are not inferior to acoustic, as I was also told. Also, when you learn to play your electric, you are learning acoustic as well. Guitar is Guitar. Simply by doing searches online, you can learn all about the electric guitar, the different kinds, and how to play. Good luck!!!

I've heard that too, but then I got a Fender Strat on Christmas and I don't believe it anymore!!! :) There is way more motivation if you just start playing what you really want to play! Guitar Center is a GREAT place to go for info. They will help you out TREMENDOUSLY!!!

I haven't played in along time but I heard the same. I think it's good for your finger dexterity to start on an acoustic. My first electric was a "Hondo". 100 bux. I was given a yamaha acoustic. Nice guitar. I moved up the a Charvel after awhile. I'd say if you're just getting into the guitar get something affordable at first. Checkout the Fender website. The Squire is allround good model.

I agree with everyone else here, learn the electric guitar first. If that's what you want to do, then go for it. Anyway, electric guitar is; a) easier to finger than acoustic, b) more versatile, you can make more sounds with it, c) almost as expensive to get into at first as buying a starter/semi-decent acoustic will be, d) just plain cooler anyway.

Everyone learns differently, there is no set path/method. Learning (and sticking with) guitar will be one of the most rewarding things you will do.

For the value/quality/looks, I think Epiphone has the most impressive starter guitar sets

When my husband learned to play the guitar he was 12 years old and started on a Sears Silver-tone, which , at the time was a good guitar to learn on but at the same time affordable. You don't have to go expensive to learn and the electric would be the way to go. He now has several guitars including acoustic, with his most prized being a 1962 Fender Stratocaster (and could play with any big rock band he is that good!). A Marshall gray front stack completes his sound. You only need a small practice amp to play through but at least make sure it is a decent one so you can hear your notes and sounds clearly. We found a New York Pro one-quarter size for our six year old grandson to learn to play on. We had not ever heard of a New York Pro before and believe me it can sing! My husband plays it like Eddie VHalen does his little guitar. Its BAD! I would look for one of this brand to learn on. Don't know what the full size ones cost but the little one was about 250 bucks.
