Get in the habit of down/up picking and practice scales till your fingers bleed.
I do best when I work on a few tunes at once. Once I start to have difficulties with a tune I'll change songs for a while to avoid frustration. There is plenty of learning to do, so I try to keep it fun.
I assume that you know the value of technique.
Sit upright.
Don't anchor your picking hand with your pinkie to the body.
Try to keep your thumb centered on the neck.
Bla, bla, bla...

Chinmusic 851 speaks the truth.

Charlie said what I was going to say. Do first what you NEED to do. Then reward yourself by doing what you want to do. Either just jamming or learning a song you like. When you're doing all that up/down and etc, use that metronome. Keep speeding it up as you gain accuracy. It will clean up your picking. Sometimes you'll sneak in a down/down instead of alternate picking without even realizing it. HAVE FUN!
