Well, first of all, know the basic parts of a guitar. Know what frets are and the tuning pegs.

Next, know how each string should be tuned --- or how should they sound. In standard tuning, the sound of each string should correspond to the following notes:

E-A-D-G-B-e

The "E" is your thickest string and the "e" is your thinnest string.

If you are not sure of the tuning, ask someone you know --- a friend or a teacher --- who knows how to tune a guitar and let them tune your guitar for you. If you can't find one, you can either buy a guitar tuner or you can go to http://www.fender.com. I think they have an on-line tuner there.

Then practice strengthening your fingers. Stretching them is also important. Just press on any string on any part of the fretboard and make each note sound clearly. Do this for every finger.

In any case --- and I'm speaking from experience here --- the best way to learn is really not through videos because videos will not necessarily translate some things in "lay-man's" terms nor does it really teach in a pace where you can really catch-up. Learn from someone you know who can play the guitar. If you can't hire a teacher then maybe you can ask a friend who can play the guitar to teach you.

Well its best for you to hire a teacher.

i could help you but unfortunatly your not my neighbor, lol....but get a teacher, they are great and they help you on your level...

Go to Chord House on the web and go to the easy guitar room. There will be fingering diagrams of all of the basic chords. Start with all of the majors A through G. Then learn all of the minors, A through G. After you have learned these 14 basic chords, all other chords are variations. Start strumming through the chords with 4 strums each. Then as time goes on, you can start by going through groups of chords that sound good together like C,F,&G, A,E,&D, G, Aminor, Bminor. After awhile, you will get the knack of it. E-mail me if you want more tips.

Is there someone you know who already knows the guitar? See if they could show you a few chords to start out with, and just give you some tips. After that maybe you can get a book from the music store that will help you learn more chords and put them to practice. I learned by just having my brother show me the chords, then I just practiced those chords, taught myself how to strum, and I was fine.

Well, you can't just watch the video through like you're watching a movie. You start with the first lesson, or the first little section of the first lesson -- watch it, rewind it, watch it again, rewind it, try it on your guitar, watch it again, try it again on your guitar, etc. until you've learned that one little bit, then go on to the next little bit, and so on. It can be very tedious.

And of course the big problem with learning off of videos or out of books is that you have no one coaching you to make sure you're holding the guitar correctly or placing your fingers on the fretboard correctly or picking or strumming the right way......so there are lots of opportunities for you to pick up all kinds of bad habits and bad techniques that will totally mess you up and hold you back from making any progress later on.

You need at least a few lessons with a teacher to get started. If you can't afford them yourself, ask your parents to pay for them (they're the ones who got you the guitar, right? Surely they want you to learn to play it?). Once you've learned how to tune your guitar, the right way to hold the guitar and the pick, place your fingers correctly on the fretboard, and pick or strum, and maybe learned a couple of chords, you can work on your own using DVD's or a book or whatever. If you have a friend who plays guitar well, who can get you started with these basics, that would work too.

But the truth is that without some guidance and instruction in the very beginning from a live human being, you will most likely get frustrated and quit.

Just type in "guitar lessons". Also, get yourself a little $5 Guitar Chord book from your local music store to get your basic knowledge of major and minor guitar chords too. Those things are killer and really help you out too. Good luck and hope you find what you looking for.
