I would recommend acoustic or electric guitar. Classical guitars are harder to play since the neck is bigger.

You should go to the guitar store and try to play as many guitars in your price range that you can find. Choose the one that sounds and feels the best. If you know someone who plays then see if you can get them to come along to help. You don't have to spend a lot of money but don't buy the cheapest thing that you can find just because of the price. That is the best advice I could give.

You may want to get a book like "Guitar for Dummies" (no joke). It is really a great book for somebody teaching themself guitar.

There are plenty of web pages with online lessons www.wholenote.com is one of them and is a great site. There are also some free lessons up on youtube. Search there for "guitar lessons." Search the answers here for online guitar lessons or "how to learn guitar" and you will see tons of sites and resources.

Just remember to practice every day for at least a half an hour. (hour may be better, actually the more you can practice, the better) It may be tough at first.

I can't say that any of those instruments are easy !!!!! I play classical guitar, and I think that's a great way to learn how to play guitar, I start a lot of my students out on playing finger style, that is after the preliminaries, songs like the Beatles Yesterday, or Claptons Tears In Heaven.....these I throw in to keep them from getting bored working with just classical, and they love it !!!!!!!!!!! Please get a teacher, I'm not just saying this because I teach, I think to get off on the right start you have to know all the basics and know how to play them correctly, after that I then start the students on some fun things like Yesterday. I have noticed that most people who teach themselves really never get very far, they usually stop at playing about ten chords and then either quit or don't advance any further, so for the first year at least get a teacher !!!!!!!!!

I'd say you should try the bass guitar. Its a very easy instrument to learn compared to guitar, because with guitar, you usually learn chord shapes that require you to play many notes together at once while with bass, you usually just play individual notes. Also, unless you are planning on playing jazz, bass guitar music will be relatively simple while still sounding good. It apparently is quite a good instrument to do self-study with; I've got a lot of friends who have become brilliant bass players by themselves. Although, if it is possible to get a teacher, you should, as it speeds up your learning incredibly.
