Position:Home>Performing Arts> How do you find a non-religious choir?

Question:I live in the South US and the only choirs available are christian church choirs. Being that I'm not a christian (or adhere to any religion) I'd feel like a fake, and besides they probably wouldn't take me anyway. Not that I have a problem with sacral music or the awesome acoustics of some churches, for they combine very nicely.

Most church choirs welcome everyone. Otherwise they would not have anyone to convert! (You have to be aware that they will try to reason with you) That being said, as long as you respect their traditions, there is no hypocrisy in joining a religious organization for professional reasons. If you insist on finding a secular choir however, contact your local community colleges, Universities, and community centers. They are also sometimes listed under the heading "Glee Clubs." Keep an eye open for performances around the holiday seasons as well. You can usually find a secular choir by going to one of their performances and expressing an interest in joining before or afterward. It's a long shot, but you can also look on the internet. Start with your town or city, follow that by a comma or the word and. Put in the words:

Concert Choir
Chorus
Singers
Madrigal
Vocal Ensemble
Glee Club

and see what you get. Your entertainment editor at your local paper should be aware of what's going on in town as well, but the best source you really have is your local choir teacher at school, or in your affiliated college or university. B est of luck and if you still don't find anything, get together with three or four friends, and have them invite three or four friends, and then have them invite - - - oh my goodness, you've started a choir!

You can get free material from the Choral Public Domain Library and other fine sources on the net. You will need an accompanist and a rehearsal space. Again, check with your local High schools, colleges, rec centers, libraries (yes, they do allow you to make organized noise there soemtimes) and of course, religious institutions!

just join a church choir. it doesn't matter.

Is there such thing as a non-religious choir? I think it's rare. The only non-religious choirs I know are in schools.

Look for choirs that aren't church choirs.

There might also be some barbershopeaque womens choirs (i.e. sweet adelaides) in your locale. Call a local college and your chamber of commerce and enquire there.

Well, at my friend's church, they have rock music. But, if thats all you have then thats all you have unless you want to move to like ohio.

Pray for one...hahahahahaha!

You may have to get to your nearest sizeable city to participate in a community chorus. Follow the concert listings to see who is performing and how to get in. Find a voice teacher and ask them. There may not be anthing immediately local, but Southerners DO have culture!
