Position:Home>Performing Arts> How long does it take to be great at being a guitarist?

Question:I don't really care how long it takes. I want to become a great guitarist in the future. I have just started playing guitar early september, I can play Stand by me, Ode To Joy, Jingle Bells, and I can play almost all of on the arrow by afi, I just started to learn it. Right now all I know about the choards and notes and such are:

CHoards-
G
A
D
D7
Am
Em
B7 [kind of remember it]
F
C
and I believe a few more

as for notes, I remember them from doing a scale [ listed from 6th string to 1rst string]

E
F
G

A
B
C

D
E
F

G
A

B
C
D

E

G

That's pretty much it that I can think of from the top of my head. I know I don't know much

Time is different for everyone. You can't rush an acquired skill like playing an instrument---practicing well, progressing gradually, taking lessons, and interacting with other musicians will help you on you way. It takes years to master an instrument, and the ones who are amazing have been playing for decades.
How quickly you progress depends on what I mentioned above:)
Keep practicing and don't expect immediate results--before you realize it, you'll be "there."

For me as a musician..
The key is PRACTICE..
Just dont rush yourself.
It takes time to be
a good player..
keep rocking!!

How long ??

A life time !!! Even as you improve you will keep finding new unusual chord changes and sequences.

Although it may not be your "scene", listen to different styles of guitar, you will generally find something there that stands out for you to try and emulate. (Troubleclef - on You Tube is worth watching.

Welcome to the club and good luck.

It depends on what style of music you like to play and your own personal opinion of what makes a guitarist "great". I've played for 13 years, and I think I'm pretty good, but I still learn new things the more I play.

You will never stop getting better as long as you practice practice practice. Keep it up and within a year you will be amazed how much better you are.

You're on a good path so far. To sum up what could really happen, alot can happen. Just practice daily, branch out your tastes in music, pick up new techniques and ideas and sooner or later you won't recognize your playing ability from when you first started.

Minimum length timewise, and I'm just basing this off myself, is 2 solid years. Just don't ever falter, no matter how many face-melters you see.

That and throw some blues scales in your list there. Get some soul in there.

If you're looking to be great, give it up. If you're looking to appreciate what you can accomplish with the instrument, then you've got a great start. You've been playing since September, so have I. September of 1964.
