Most beginners buy a basic pack that comes with everything (guitar, amp, headphones, picks, strap, cords, etc). This is good primarily for starters that aren't sure if they are gonna stick with it or like guitar. It's somewhat cheap and comes with all the stuff needed so you don't need to go out and buy something you don't know anything about. Examples of basic starter packs:

Fender Squire Pack - Almost every beginner i have met has one of these and its decent but kinda cliche if you know what I mean, too many people have these, really common

Ibanez Pack - In my opinion, better than the Squire and less common. Better sound and more durable. About same price.

Epiphone starter - Better than Ibanez. Better sound and tone. Might be a little more expensive the previosu two.

If you don't want starter packs, some good brands for beginners are...
Fender, Epiphone, Ibanez, Dean, ESP, Schecter. However, out of these choices, but top choices would be Fender and Epiphone.

If you still aren't sure, go to a guitarcenter or whatever local music store and try out all the guitars you are considering because the best guitar is the guitar most comfortable and easiest to play for you.

Also, since you mention you like playing ac/dc and GNR, then probably Epiphone is the guitar for you. It's a hard rock/classic rock kinda guitar. Angus Young and Slash both used Gibsons, which is the same company as epiphone, just ffor more advanced players instead.

Fender Stratocaster

start out with a low end epiphone or strat. do not buy knock offs as you will regret it later. you can use these till you get good enough for something more money wise in these names

ibanez, bc rich or the previous 'low end strat' feeder

I wouldn't recommend an electric guitar for a beginner....I've told all my students this....electric doesn't sound well unless you know how to play it....it's much better to start on acoustic...some of my students didn't listen and later were sorry, in fact one was in my family, and she was so unhappy with the electric guitar that I bought her an acoustic for her birthday....electric doesn't sound very good unless you know how to play it....and it's impossible to play it at night because it's too loud and your family members will want to throw shoes at you if your plugged in, practice on electric guitar doesn't sound well unless you are plugged in, so playing at night is impossible !!!!! Acoustic is better, you can pick it up even if it's 2:00 o'clock in the am, and play softly, without bothering anyone, or having to plug in amps !!!!!!!!!! Playing acoustic isn't any different then playing electric as far as the fingering goes...so don't worry about that. Are you getting a teacher ? I hope so, because leaning with a teacher is the best way to learn guitar....if you can't afford that check out the guitar teaching sites on the Internet, they have a lot of good sites today, some have DVDs, videos, Cd's, and tutors that teach on line. Learning on your own is possible but from what I've seen most don't get very far !!!!!!!!!! Guitar teacher for thirty five years !!!!!!!
