Fork out for a good guitar. I had a crappy one for 5 years and couldn't understand why I wasn't getting any better, then someone commented that the action was a bit brutal on it so I had it adjusted and started improving a lot quicker....

Practice a lot as well. You can do exercises designed to improve finger dexterity such as The Caterpillar. To nail your rythm and timing play along to songs on the radio or something (or if you have Guitar Hero use practice mode as you'll get all the backing track without the guitar track).

avenged sevenfold's guitarist is pretty good.. I would start at the basics with a good old acousic guitar though..

at guitar center they sometimes have specials where you can get one free with the purchase of 10 guitar strings.. that was a really good deal..

look around at garage sales and stuff you will be able to find one.. try to find a friend who can get you started with the basics and stuff.

Guitar is awesome! dont give up and keep going and you will find that its a very rewarding experience

**edit, to the guy dissing guitar hero.. dont hate that game. A lot of good guitarists enjoy playing guitar hero.. its just a GAME.

Do you know how many people ask this question a week ??? Tons, but there is no fast way to learn it....all I ever suggest is to learn it the correct way, weekly lessons with a teacher. How fast you learn is up to the individual, everyone learns at a different pace....some with perfect pitch learn quicker.....people with great memories can absorb music with ease, but that's not the norm....guitar is not an easy instrument to play....if you just want to play a couple of chords and fool around OK, you could do that in maybe a year, but first you have to obtain those callouses that are required in order to play without pain, it also takes time to train your fingers and hand muscles....so don't be in a rush, it's more important to learn correctly, not quickly !!!!!! If you can't afford a teacher go on one of the sites that they have for learning guitar, there's a lot of decent ones out there today, check one of them out and see what you think !!!!!! Start with acoustic, not electric !!!!!!

If you're going to learn guitar like that, You'll get absolutly nowhere. And if you do get somewhere, you'll be absolutly HATED by the real guitarists that actually took the time and effort to practice and play guitar because they LOVE TO DO IT. NOT, to learn fast, impress anyone, play any certain songs, or to be cool/famous.

Learning guitar is NOT easy in some places, it's NOT as easy as 'guitar hero' (poser game by the way) If you REALLY want to learn, you'll get a REAL teacher, you'll start easy on an acoustic guitar preferibly, you'll NOT learn choards but actual notes, THEN work your way up.

If you go through with this additude, you'll just disgrace and give a bad name and steriotype to all guitarists.

There is no "fastest" way to learn an instrument. Learning one involves lessons, practice, practice, lessons, practice, lessons, practice...do you get my point?

Study with a professional guitar teacher.
