I got an acoustic guitar from my parents as a birthday present, I think, when I was 12. Took a few months worth of lessons on it but didn't like my teacher so I didn't practice, so my parents discontinued the lessons. The guitar sat in the corner of my room gathering dust for about a year, until I found out that my cousin, who is 6 months older than me, had gotten a guitar around the same time I did, had learned a few chords, and was up to trying to figure out songs off the radio by ear. That inspired me -- at the age of 13 -- to dust off the guitar, get out the instruction book, and teach myself to play.

It took me years of trial and error working through various instruction books but by the time I was in my late 20s I became a pretty good folk fingerstyle guitar picker. For a couple of years I picked up the electric bass guitar to join a local basement rock band, then when the band broke up, I went back to my solo acoustic fingerpicking, but I'd gotten a taste of playing with other people and I liked it.

Right around that time, I became friends with a woman who played old-time fiddle. When she found out I played guitar she started inviting me to old-time music jam parties at her house. That got me into playing old-time rhythm guitar with a flatpick, jamming at parties and festivals and friends' houses. From there after a couple of years, I started branching out into other instruments. I bought a mandolin and took a few months worth of lessons on it; then a year or two later, bought a banjo and taught myself how to play it; then finally a couple of years after that, I got a fiddle and taught myself to play that too.

I'm female, and now 49 years old. I don't play as much guitar as I used to because I spend most of my music practice time with the fiddle and the banjo, but I still do play.

When I heard 'The Wings' from Brokeback Mountain. I've never seen the movie, but the guitar music in it is so beautiful. Yes, I started learning I think a year ago. I'm a girl.

I'm male and I started learning in high school in the 1970's. I got good enough to bang out whatever chords needed to be banged out in a few local bands, but I never learned scales or how to play lead. I was mainly a keyboard player and even our drummer played guitar better than I did.

I've loved guitar ever since I can remember....that's because my father played the jazz clubs in Philly and that's all I ever heard on weekends, him and his buddy's practicing in our living room till the wee hours. So at nine I heard Andre Segovia playing classical guitar and I said to my Father, now that's the sound that I want to make....he didn't like classical but admired people who could play that style.... so I went to school and studied music !!!! I've taught it for over thirty five years....and I've loved every minute of it. It takes time to learn the guitar, it's not an easy instrument to play...unless you just learn a couple of chords and play those, but my advice to you is to have a teacher and learn the correct way....learn to read music and all other aspects of music.....it takes about three years to learn to play decently..... depending on daily practice and talent
