You should go to the guitar store and try to play as many guitars in your price range that you can find. Choose the one that sounds and feels the best. If you know someone who plays then see if you can get them to come along to help.

I wouldn't go too much below $250 for a beginning guitar. You shouldn't have to pay more than $350. Your first guitar doesn't need to be the most beautiful or have the most features. You want to make sure it feels and sounds decent to you. That way it will keep you motivated to keep practicing.

Go online and find a bunch in your price range and write down or print out the make and model numbers. (The store prices will be higher usually) You can use the paper to take notes about what you played and whether you liked it or not.

There are several depending on your playing level...if you're accomplished you'd want a better guitar...a good Martin or Taylor can be had for around $1000.00...if your a novice and have the basics down Yamaha and Fender make excellent guitars in the $300-700 range, while Yamaha has an even less expensive guitar for around $250...if you're serious about learning to play you don't want to discourage yourself with a cheap guitar with high action that will be painful to play, not to mention difficult to get a clean tone out of...it will pay in the long run to save up a little and get a nice one...

Well, I would go to the music store and play a really nice guitar. Once your ear knows what to listen for, then look in your price range. Find the one your EAR likes! If you ear doesn't like the instrument, you will not enjoy playing it.

Also, there are two main types of acoustics. Classical, which has nylon strings an is usually finger picked. And the modern type which has steel or brass strings, and is used extensively in popular music. I would buy the latter.

The advice above is all good, I just want to add that you should avoid any guitar that has a fiberglass or plastic back. The tone is not good on them even though they look nice.

good luck

Steel String ??? CF Martin which has a lifetine warranty on their neck and the only company to offer this.

Or Gibson Dove series.....around $2000.00 . Both are awesome guitars and gain value over the years. So if you decide to sell them in 10 years plus, you will get more for them.

Nylon string guitar....Get CF Martin or Godin.
