There are several videos of Greek dancing on Youtube; I show a couple of them in my classes when discussing the history of Greek theatre.

Anyway, most of the folk dances are done by holding hands or locking arms in some way, forming a semi-circle, and dancing around in a circular pattern. The basic steps will be repetitive, but the dancer leading the line (which goes counter-clockwise) is free to improvise and to do acrobatic and flashy special steps. These dances are called by names such as (and note: the English spelling may vary) kalimatyano, kritikos sirto, shifto.

Then there are some solo dances that involve somewhat free dancing, usually done by one individual with the rest of the company cheering on--once in a while these will be done as a duet by close friends or family members. Men will generally do a dance for which I don't know the title, but it involves a good deal of high-stepping and crossover stepping. Women (and occasionally joined by men) will do the chifte-telli, a basic sort of middle eastern bellydance.
