everyone has their own taste. Yamaha is really good though

I'd say Taylor for acoustic guitars, and Fender for electric.

Yes, it's all a matter of taste, and also relevant is type of guitar.

The best nylon-string acoustics are hand-made by artisans in Spain, or maybe California.

Steel-string acoustics that have lots of fans are Gibson, Martin, Ovation (which also has lots of guitarists who hate them), with some respect for Washburn and Yamaha and a couple others--and a good number of acoustic players also prefer hand-made instruments from smaller workshops.

For solid-body electrics, the Fender Strat is considered by most to be the sine qua non, tho' some like Hamer or Carvin or, if spacey, Steinberger.

And for hollow-body electrics, Gibson seems like the clear leader.

It depends

Off the shelf the American Les Paul Deluxe or Fender Strat for electrics or Martin for acoustics

There is also Alembic for electrics. Very popular.

It's a matter of taste. I own a 1963 Gibson Les Paul because ofthe jazzy bluesy sound. I play my Jackson for the bite and the haronic sensitivity. I have a fender and I love it for sweeps and clarity of tone.
