It is possible.

However, a lot of things in this world are possible. That doesn't mean they are a good idea.

It depends on how serious you are about it. If you just want to play for fun and not play with any ensembles, there wouldn't really be anything wrong with it.

However, if you plan to play on any level of seriousness, I urge you to start on the flute. The piccolo embouchure is much more difficult than that flute. If you ever did decide you wanted to play the flute, it would be extremely difficult for you to get good tone on it. Your tone would probably always be pinched and airy. It would be a nightmare to try to learn.

What that other person said about children starting on piccolo-that's an absolutely horrible idea. (for the same reasons I mentioned above)I have never heard of a teacher doing that. You would have to be really inexperienced and not know much about the piccolo to think that it would be a good idea. Most children can hold the flute just fine with some practice. I know somebody who started the flute in second grade.

When you learn even just the flute, it's better to learn the lower notes first. Not the very lowest, but the lower ones. This will allow you to develop your tone correctly. The higher registers are built off of the low register. It is important that you learn flute first, because piccolo is an octave higher then the flute.

You should be able to play the flute for a while first. It will make everything better and easier for you in the long run.

Good luck.

Sure, why not, that would be like saying could I play flute without playing oboe, of course you can....just study the fingerings and go for it, good luck !!!!!!!!! Go on google and type in this, fingering chart for piccolo !!!!!!!!!

It is possible, but it won't make you a good piccolo player. That is instrument is difficult to begin on and without having a solid foundation in aural ability, fingering skills, and general techniques will put you seriously behind in comparison to your bandmates and only leave you frustrated.
Secondly, your role in an ensemble will be limited. The band director will not always have music with a piccolo part.

I encourage you to begin on flute and transition to piccolo once you learn the flute fundamentals. You can be the designated piccolo player for the ensemble when the opportunities arise.

Yup! Some Flute teachers would start young children on the piccolo instead of the Flute! Their fingers are too small for the Flute. But a lot of teachers wont accept you if you want to take lessons from them tho. The piccolo is easier to play after you have played the Flute first! So worth more thought
