Question:I am really interested in playing the guitar and drums. Do you think I should focus on one or pursue both? Money is not an issue. However time is; I take several AP classes and dedicate many hours a week in studies.

If your time is an issue, I'd suggest one at a time. If you have little time and you want to learn two instruments at the same time, many techniques you learn for one have a habit of "leaking over" into the other instrument until you're solid in both of them.

whatever you want.

If it's a matter of time then I'd say stick with the guitar....I have someone in my family who is learning three sometimes four at a time, guitar, flute, piccolo, and keyboard....but she's sixteen and has time for all this. If time wasn't an issue I'd say go for both but because of the time issue stick with one for now !!!!!

That is pretty awesome that you want to learn two instruments at the same time! I think you should go for it! You should work on both of them and then if you need to take time off because of school, then you can always go back to it. Both the guitar and the drums will require practice, but I think that you should go ahead and learn them both. Why not? I think it is a great idea. Good luck!!! =D

45 years ago my grandmother bought me a classical guitar. We had a old piano and my mother had a violin (she played the fiddle). My grandmother had a Gibson L5 as did her brother in-law (my mothers uncle). We all sang and did a few gigs together. I played in a few rock, blue grass, blues bands over the years. My grandmother and mother sang at many weddings (mine 1980) , funerals and parties and clubs I wasn't allowed to go in.

Being the 60's I wanted to play rock and roll. And I did I play rr. I learned all those instruments and now play mandolin too.

Do what you find is FUN. BUT keep up with school. Do your best there. Unless you are planning a career in music, play them if you find it FUN, keep your grades as high as you can in those AP classes. College is the most important thing you have to deal with.

Even having the ability to play these instruments fairly well my college degrees are the most important achievement in my life. (chemistry & med school).

Work hard but have fun along the way. By the way I'm 56 and retired to Grand Cayman Is. in 2004
Best of luck!

definetly focus on one only it makes it a heck of alot easier and it makes it easier to know what to do

Learn one at a time. In the beginning stages of learning an instrument, you really need to focus on one at a time to get the basic playing techniques down to a point where you're comfortable with them, in order to make any real progress with it.

Otherwise - unless you have unlimited practice time available to spend hours a day with each instrument -- which you DON'T -- you run the risk of half-assedly wasting your time with each instrument but not getting any better at either of them.
