what does it mean when it has an ex in it like that

it means the string is muted

yep, muted, "0" means open string. mute it with the finger reaching for the "E" string.

The x's mean do not play the string. So you'd fret A, B and e, leave G open and mute the D string. This can be accomplished by placing a finger (probably the one you'd use when you fret it later on) on the D string, but don't press down. This will prevent the string from vibrating.

When there is an x that means that you play over it without that string making a sound. Try either using your thumb to play the A string (using the end of your thumb to silence the note) or us ing your middle finger to silence the string. You do not press the string done but just touch it enough to where it will not vibrate. Practice it a bit and you'll understand. If you press to hard you'll here the note play. If you press to light you will get a high ptched sound out of it (this is called a natural harmonic which you will eventually learn if you stick with guitar).

Remember to have fun
