Well, they're really not the same. They fulfill very different roles in a band, so even though they're both called "guitars", they're almost like 2 different instruments.

They're both probably about the same degree of difficulty to learn, and either one is equally well suited for beginners.

As for which is cheaper, there's no real difference in price. You can get an cheap beginner-level acoustic guitar for between $200-300, or a cheap beginner level bass with amp for about $250-300. Or you can spend thousands of dollars on a top-of-the-line professional level acoustic guitar or bass.

It all comes down to YOU: Which one do you want to play?

If your plan is to play mostly by yourself, singing and accompanying yourself on guitar -- you probably want an acoustic.

If your ambition is to join a rock band, you could play either acoustic rhythm guitar or bass. But if you're not really sure you want to play bass, then get an acoustic guitar. The stuff you learn on acoustic guitar, like chords, scales, and so on, will be useful when or if you decide to take up bass later.

I've always heard people say that the reason they learned bass was that they thought it was easier than the guitar and that it would be a good way to ease into rock. Beginner's models for each are probably about the same. I'd say that the bass is harder to get a grip on but easier to get really good at and the guitar vice versa (chords and such). They're similar instruments and both play important roles in modern music. I prefer guitar but love what the bass does for a song especially when listening to Paul McCartney.. he's the best.

they're both very different.

If you want to play something that you'll be able to sing along with and perform by yourself, go for the acoustic guitar.

Most people listening to you will not be able to recognize a song by it's bassline. there are exceptions.

Bass may be hard for some girls, as girls typically have smaller hands, but again, there are plenty of female bass players who handle their instrument well.

I would suggest guitar, because i've played both, and bass makes me feel very limited, because the typical bass has 4 strings (again, there are exceptions) but because of it's small range, it is not typically a lead instrument.

Neither are easier, both come with their own unique set of challenges
