Position:Home>Performing Arts> Gift for conductor?

Question:I know this is a peculiar question, but what is an appropriate gift for the night of a premier performance to the conductor, soloist, and even the orchestra?

It's a high school orchestra. We decided to give a donation to the orchestra itself, but I feel as if the soprano and conductor should get flowers or something...

What do you think?

Flowers are okay for the soprano, but as a conductor, unless the conductor is female I'm not sure how receptive they'll be to the gift.
High school orchestra conductors will love the donation. A lot. Unless the school is really large, budget is scarce.
If you really want to get the conductor something, like the other member mentioned, gift certificates are great. A certificate to a nice restaurant, music store (as in music store with instruments/sheet music, not cd store), or even a plaque with names of everyone to celebrate the premiere.

Flowers are nice, but they begin to lose their "meaning" once the soloist/conductor has become established.

Thank you all for input. Report It

  • Flowers would be very appropriate. It's what is traditionally given to the soloist and conductor (and the concertmaster as well) in any orchestra.

So yes, I would get them flowers for their opening night.

I've played in several orchestras. The appropriate time for giving a gift, like flowers, is after the concert is over - during the applause, give the flowers to the soloist and conductor.

As far as timing for giving the donation to the orchestra, that should be done before the concert begins. Just before the conductor and soloist enter stage, have someone go up to the podium and tell the audience about the gift you are giving - who it came from and how much it is.

Flowers are the normal....If this were a more personal gift...a new baton....or a gift to his favorite charity...most performances that I've been to the gift is flowers !!!!!

Frankly, as a soprano, I get sick of getting flowers all the time because they don't last long. One of the best gifts I was ever given as a soloist was a gift certificate to Tower Music (a really cool music store) where I could go and buy something for my collection. You might have such a store in your area or even a Borders Books like place. Everyone gives flowers... your gift will be remembered if it is out of the ordinary and shows you gave it some thought.

i actually got my conductor one of those little metal welded conductor figures. have u ever seen them?
they sell them at some music stores and they're like little stick figure people, about 6 inches tall. they also make them holding instruments. im not sure about the costs...

    and flowers are good, too.
