Position:Home>Performing Arts> I need a mezzo soprano 32-bar audition peice, help??!?

Question:I have a G3 to E5 range if it matters to you and one of the requirements is that the song have been from a show performed on Broadway. 32-bar is crazy...I know, our choral director is a total dork. The show we are doing is Anything Goes. Any suggestions would totally just make my day. ?

I would of course need to know your voice, but here are some general suggestions suggestions. I didn't add songs from very recent musicals, simply because they are usually very overdone. I've listed my favorites first, and so on.

---------------------

"People" from FUNNY GIRL
- Not a lot of people audition with this song, and it's such a strong piece for a mezzo voice.

"On My Own" from LES MISERABLES
- Yes, a some-what over-done piece, but if sung correctly it was written to turn heads!

"Hopelessly Devoted" from GREASE
- So sweet and innocent, yet so strong at the climax!

"As Long As He Needs Me" from OLIVER
- This song gives you the ability to show the actor in you, if that's what your going for, along with being a very strong mezzo piece.

"Adelaide's Lament" from GUYS AND DOLLS
- So cute, again showing your acting side.

"Memory" from CATS
- Horrible musical, but I still love this song. Again, if sung correctly it can turn heads!

"In My Own Little Corner" from CINDERELLA
- Pretty simple piece, but not done very often. Again it will show the cuter side to your character skills.

"A Cockeyed Optimist" in F Major from SOUTH PACIFIC
- Another cute song, pretty easy, but from a pretty respected musical.

---------------------

I don't know your voice so I can't make any concrete suggestions. Try looking up Musical Theatre Anthologies for Mezzos online. You'll get a lot of song books, as well as some websites!

Also, as far as the 32-bars is concerned - INCLUDE THE KEY CHANGE! If they are giving you the time to do it, then DO IT!

Good luck!

Why not go with "Blow Gabriel Blow" from Anything Goes. It would be a fast 32 bars and its perfect for a mezzo. If you can't do that song then pick another Cole Porter song like "Bewitched" or "I Get A Kick Out of You." Even "My Funny Valentine" would work because the style is similar. Good luck on your audition :-)
