Question:How can you WOW a director at a singing audition? Is it better to play it safe with a song that suits your voice? Or better to take chances with a different song?

First of all, more than likely the person listening to your audition will only request you to sing a portion of the piece you choose. If that is the case, I would suggest taking a look at your risky piece to see if there is a 16-20 bar section that you sing solid everytime. Make sure the section has a lot of vocal range, and be sure to ACT your butt off, especially in any musical theatre situation.

If the risky song is TOO risky for you, I would then suggest that you sing the easier song. However, perhaps you can find a way to spice it up a little. For example, lets say you have a sustained note on a high C (middle of treble clef). In order to "wow" the listener, perhaps use half of the notes sustained value and go up to a high E or G. As long as it's a note that is in the chord of the note originally written it will fit in with the music. Try it out. See what works best.

Just keep in mind that you need to be SOLID with whatever you decide. Even if you can hit it dead on 8 out of 10 times, the day of your audition might be time 9 or 10.

Also, as one mezzo to another - the best way to use OUR voice is to display belted dramatic dynamics on a longer sustained note - sure to wow any judge or casting director! I'm not familiar with the pieces you've listed, so sorry I can't be of more help.

Best of luck!

go for the risky song. If you play it safe its just boring and directors are always looking for someone who wows them and stand out above the rest.

well, it depends on how comfortable you feel with the song. If you think that the risky song can be sung really well, just keep practicing it. If you think that your comfy song is way better, then sing that one.

hope this helps!

Play it safe. When you get to the audition, you'll be much more nervous.
