Question:I am gonna go to this singing audition in late January. I have to sing. I have no experience and I suck. My voice is really scratchy. Point being: Are there any good excersizes where I can control my voice better, and hear myself better? Any tips or anything?

I agree with the singing teacher that's your best bet. Some other things to remember though: The warm up is absolutely vital to proper singing. You can probably look up some easy warm up scales online or even the do re me fa so la ti do works as well...you can use a piano if you're unsure of how on pitch you are. The next thing that is probably THE most important part of singing is breathing technique. You have to breath with your stomach...a good exercise for this is laying flat on your back with a book on your stomach. Take in deep breaths with your diaphragm and push the book up and then when you exhale let all the air out and let the book come back down. Do this until you can do it without the book and then try it standing up using your hand instead of the book and using your stomach to push your hand out. One last tip I can give is just sing! Anything you can no matter what style. If you like it sing along. Do this when your alone so you won't be shy and that's when you can really get a feel for your voice. But back to the beginning I think the best thing for you would be private lessons because they'll be able to tell you what your doing wrong.

Get a singing teacher to help you through the process

Yes, record yourself singing. Then listen to it and figure out a few things you can do to improve. Also, practice sining low to high and back down again with a good sound.

Listen to Nikolai, he knows what he's talking about.
