Position:Home>Performing Arts> What is up with the brass and woodwind feud?

Question:there is no feud because everybody knows that WOODWINDS are far superior than brass. haven't you ever wondered why the flute and clarinet scetions are always the biggest??!?!?

why would anybody want to play an instrument where you need to empty a spit valve?? (even if its only condensation, its still nasty)

clarinet cats rock!!! =P

GO WOODWINDS, WE RULE!!!!!

It's crazy isn't it? Just last week a saw a bunch of dudes with flutes beating the hell out of this Tuba player. Then a bunch of guys with trumpets came to his rescue. Everything seemed cool until the clarinets showed up. That was a day to remeber I tell you, don't mess with those clarinet players. They're crazy.

We just pretend like we're better than everyone else

And find humor in making fun of anyone who doesn't play brass of course.

BRASS JUST DONT HAVE RESPECT FOR WOODWINDS CAUSE THEY THINK THEY HAVE NO POWER, BUT THERE PLENTY OF TIMES THAT WITHOUT THE WOODWINDS THERD BE NO SONG, NOT EVERYTHING IS A FANFAIR.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has everything to do with the embouchure.

Brass know that woodwinds have to have a crutch to make noise.

As an ex professional French Horn player, remembering how I was instructed that French Horn was considered to be the instrument that helped unite woodwind and brass, I stand neutral.

For our school band, it's just kidding around. But some people really take it far. People just say that the others have it easy or anybody could play that instrument.

Woodwinds think they are cool because they play fast. Brass think they are cool because they play loudly.

Which do you think is better?

I'm a flutist ;)

first off these other answers are just people bragging because they play in one of the sections. the brass section has brought all of the life to the music. brass can play the highest and the lowest notes. it takes a lot of skill to play in the brass section because you need to buzz your lips in the mouthpiece. there is a large number of instruments in the brass which makes it popular. the woodwind section has all of the responsibilities of keeping the audiance at a calm level of attitude. they have the basic melody in the sons. the woodwinds have a soothing sound to them. unlike the brass. there are a lot of differences in the sections. they both are the dominent instruments in the orchestra. they fight over power in the music world. but without one or the other the orchestra would be nothing of any good because that would leave percussion to do all of the work.

i am a trumpet player and i dont think either section is better than the other!

most everyone here has answered from a band point of view.
In the orchestra, and expecially in the pit, things are very dense. You have only about 3 square feet of room that marks your territory ( more for basses, celli, and harp, of course) and the unspoken competiton is always there.
Some theaters have such bad acoustics that it's really very difficult to hear yourself think in the pit, let alone hear what it is that you are trying to produce as a beautiful sound.
Acousticians and sound engineers have been trying to put in baffles, plexiglass screens, dampening devices between the various rows of chairs, but face it, if you've got someone's bell or flare pointing straight at you, it's gonna be loud and cause hard feelings.
Despite the camaraderie that may go on on a concert platform, you put the orchestra back in the pit, and the temperature goes up immediately.
