Position:Home>Performing Arts> How do you detune a guitar by 1/2?

Question:If you have a tuner, do what the other guy said. But if you don't have a tuner, presuming you have your guitar in tune to standard tuning, hold down the fifth fret of the low E string, then move up or down depending on which way you want to tune. tune your a string to the pitch you make on the low E and just tune the rest of the strings. to tune the low E down or up hold down the fifth fret of the low E and tune that pitch to match the pitch of the open A string.. If that's too confusing get back to me

If you have a tuner, just set all the strings 1/2 way up on the tuner setting, but i don't think it will sound right.

Tune your 6th string down a bit so when you do 6th string, 6th fret, and pluck that, along with 5th string open, they sound the same. Then, detune each of the strings to sound unicen (the same). Using like this:

1|--------------------------------0- Drop
2|-------------------------0--5----- Drop
3|------------------0--4------------ Drop
4|-----------0--5------------------- Drop
5|-----0-5-------------------------- Drop
6|--6-------------------------------- Drop

Drop is there so that you know to drop the strings to sound unicen.
I hope it is not confusing, if it is, then email me it is on my profile. But you can also look it up on www.ultimate-guitar.com that site rocks.

You want to go down (flat) by a half step, which is one fret. So tune to Eb,Ab,Db,Gb,Bb,Eb. If you don't have a tuner, Fret the low E at the 4th fret (Ab) and tune the A string to that - do the other strings the regular way, then go back and tune the low E to the high E. (now an Eb)
