Question:I heard from those who play the chinese flute, the dizi, that if you wear braces you can't play the flute 'cos you will produce a 'escaped-air'/lou4 yin1/flat sound which sounds horrible. I'm not sure whether this applies to the western concert flute..

Playing the flute w/braces is not hard at all, I had no trouble getting use to it, and I still play the same. It's a non-removable retainer that gave me trouble. Having braces doesn't make you sound any different if you are a good player. One thing you need to do though is to keep your top lip completely over your braces.

people in band here hhave braces and the can play just fine

They can play

i had braces in high school and had no problems playing the flute or piccolo, it's a little weird getting used too, but doesn't take that long

i used to have braces and i used to play the flute.

i didn't even have a hard time working around them.

Nope! It takes a while to get used to playing with braces and the flutist may have to adjust their mouth! But other than that it doesn't make a difference

FYI I just rembered in old trick used for braces and flute! You put two pieces of masking tape (on top ofeach other) on the flute player side of the lip plate. This changes the angle and makes it more comfortable
