Position:Home>Performing Arts> What are some noticeable differences between open-holed flutes and closed-hole f

Question:I am getting a sterling silver open-holed flute soon, and I tried it with the plugs in, since I can't make it sound without the plugs yet. Does anyone have any tips when changing from a closed-hole to an open-holed flute? Are there any noticeable differences in tone quality, loudness, etc?

There are different opinions about this. Most teachers .. well some.. believe that an open hole Flute has a more brighter pitch then the closed hole. Since the holes are open the air has a chance to resonant so some think that it may be louder then a closed hole! This has certainly be the case for me but other teachers will say that there is no sound difference at all!

Some say the open hole flute forces your fingers in the right position! If you don't put the fingers curved on the right place then you dint get a sound. Low C is also harder to play then it already is. Others say that E is hard to play as well but I haven't had any trouble! For me my open hole is more in tune and comfortable then my closed one

Open hole Flutes are useful for extended techniques! Like glissando's, pitch bends and other changes in pitch including tuning! It really is up to you! Go to a specialist flute store and try them! If and when you do change put all the plugs in and take them out gradually one at a time! The last one being E as it is harder to play! I started practising on open hole while still teaching on the closed hole! It takes a while to get used to them

actually
open holded flutes give u a very different sound
it's a fuller sound but it is difficult when you switch from a close-hole to open-holed. You just need to get used to placing your fingers exactly on top of the hole inorder to cover all of them when u need to
open holded flutes and close-holed flutes are like a piano and a grand piano.. They have different sound qualities and i personally like the sound open holded flutes produce :)
