Position:Home>Performing Arts> What is the difference between a film producer and a film director? Who is the o

Question:it's a collaborative effort.

The story actually comes from the writer (script or screenplay).

The Producer sees something commercially viable in that vision and then hires a director to turn that script vision into a reality vision that everyone can see.

The director has his own view, so does the writer, so does the producer.

The Producers job is to control costs, keep things on schedule and keep the vision high quality and commercial.

If the producer doesn't like something he'll try and get the director to change it or re-shoot it or revise it.

Maybe the directors ending is too obscure or droll, the producer may insist they do an alternative ending that is more upbeat.

The director either goes along as part of a creative team or leaves the project at that point and the producer hires other people to re-work the ending.

After the director is through the producer and stuido may re-cut the picture, change scenes around, trim them or delete them.

You see all this in DVD special features

So there is a directors cut

A producer or studio cut

The producer is the money, the person who makes things happen concretely. The director is the one driving the cameras and the actors and making most of the artistic decisions. The story is done by the screenwriter, who may or may not also be the director.

The story is created by either the original screenwriter or a book, play, etc. Screenplays are usually re-written by more experienced, but not always better, writers.

The producer is the one that hires everyone and gets the movie made. He hires the director, usually finds a casting agency to hire the actors, finds people for the crew, etc.

The director puts the actors and script together, and shoots the movie.

If you think in terms of sports, the producer would be the owner and the director would be the coach.

Ok the director stages and directs the show. They tell where to go (not dance numbers) and if they want something else in someones voice in this scene and so on.

The producer pays for it and gives it a way for the show to be seen.

The one who creates the story is the writer

If its a musical the songs are either by the writer or a seperate composer.

If a musical the dance numbers are by the choegropher (spelling) or sometimes the director also does that.

Hope that helps you be less confused :)
