Question:I play piano for my high school choir. I'm good enough but not amazing. The bad part is that I get really nervous before and during concerts. I either mess up or just stop playing most of the music and revert to playing chords. How do I get over my nerves better?

It seems that you are concentrating more on your nerves than the task at hand. You have a confidence problem.

In music it is important to keep going, don't slow down, decrescendo because you are unsure. Battle on. The old saying goes "when in doubt belt it out".

So what if you make a mistake. Most people wouldn't know. You will know but disregard it and carry on as if it's nothing. If you're accompanying many are relying upon you.

It's good to have some nerves to keep you edgy and alert. Have something light to eat or drink beforehand. Take some deep and slow breathes. Tell yourself that you can do it, and don't let your fears overrun you. Remember people are there to listen mostly to the choir so if you do throw in a few mistakes they'll probably be camouflaged.

Be confident. Play confidently. Everybody makes mistakes.

just amuse yourself. if there amused consider it a bonus, on there part!

warming up has a great psychological effect. Try doing some finger articulation warm ups or maybe even go for a brisk jog before you play. You'll find yourself more relaxed because you'll have expended nervous energy and you'll feel more ready to play.
