you are the only person in the world who can hear the sound that goes on in your head. I am the only person who can hear my sound. Etc.
what the rest of the world hears can sometimes be quite different., but that's the voice you need to train.
A recording device is a thoroughly nasty thoroughy honest piece of equipment that tells us exactly what we sound like.
( It has to be able to deal with the harmonics of the human voice, so don't trust your cell-phone, that just picks up speech harmonics which are flat and pale compared to singing.) Even an old-fashioned cassette recorder with a decent external mike will be adequate to give you honest feedback.
Then comes the painstaking practice, getting to know and remember how it feels in your body when the machine says it sounds good. Your ears will trick you- they will say, this sounds good in my head, and the machine will say- this sounds woolly and muffled. You need to learn the sensation of how it feels when the voice jumps away from your ears and gets out to the people ( who will eventually be paying for the experience).
Before we had recording devices, we had singing teachers who performed this function. They still do! They give better feedback because they know how to go about making the necessary alterations to produce a good sound, whereas the machine will only give you the results.
Please don't ask people in this forum for on-line lessons.
There is really nothing we can do for you, since we are not there in person. Check out your local school/church choruses or community organizations. Ask friends who sing if they know of a good singing teacher they can recommend. ask at local music stores if they know of singing teachers.
Singing can be so very different than speaking that it's worth finding out what you can really do.
Have fun on the ride!

a great way to find out if it sounds good is to sing for others who you know will be honest with you. you can also record yourself, ask someone if it sounds like you (because some recordings don't turn out accurate) then listen to it and assess from that. Even if others tell you are a bad singer, who cares?!? you love to sing, so keep on singin' even if you are only singing to your pet dog. Also, taking voice lessons can usually at least improve your voice, so even if you're not going to be a popstar, you can at least learn some new stuff for yourself! Hope that helps.
