Position:Home>Performing Arts> How do I play bass better?

Question:Well as an ex-bass player I would suggest that you do three things. Practise your scales, make sure you are in sync with the drummer, and always remember that less is more. Good luck.

This is a very broad question. I am a beginning guitar student at the moment myself here in northern California. I am 43 years old and make my living as a chef in restaurants. When i signed up with a lady blues teacher who also is a recording artist and has a cd on itunes I told her that I want to learn all facets of the instrument. to become a well rounded guitarist who could function in a group setting, and or read music. her suggestion to me was to to listen to all kinds of guitar playing not just the early stones chuck berry stuff i asked about. So i went and got all kinds of music from 50's jazz to early jamaican ska and two tone to 70's fusion to early 70's hard rock like deep purple and nazareth. It made sense to listen other forms of music from other eras artists, styles etc. My point is to listen to bass players from all eras. on my ipod i have jaco pastorius the bassist from weather report, i also like billy sheehan from mister and niacin. I dig james jamerson on the old motown singles. tony levin from peter gabriel and king crimson is riveting. geddy lee from rush is an unsung master. keep your mind open you can something from every player. find the bare soul of someone's playing. will lee on the letterman show is also good. Listen to matt bissonette. Simplicity is beauty in electric playing.simplicity of sound can be very decieving in terms of the listener's view point. What i mean by this just cause someone is thumping the root note doesnt mean its simple. Oh one last thing make your playing swing... I hope this helps
