I tell all my students the same thing....in the beginning go for an acoustic....electric sounds great once you learn how to play, but before that forget about it....nothing sounds worse then someone learning guitar on electric !!!!! Some who went electric were sorry later and they saw my point....and when they came for lessons they wanted to play my guitar, I have acoustic and classical.....most love to learn finger style in the beginning, they think it sounds so much better....one student who just started is already playing the Beatles song, Yesterday, and it sounds so much better when she picks the notes instead of strumming it or playing single notes. Is you Father going to buy this guitar for you.....I hope that he plays so that he knows what to look for....you have to make sure that the strings are not too high off of the fingerboard.....and not too low where it makes buzzes.....I always think it's better if the person that the guitar is for goes with the person buying it....just to make sure that it suites you fingers, hands, and that you like the sound....today there's so much to pick from, you can spend hours in the Guitar Center, just trying to make up your mind as to which one you want !!!!!!!!! Good luck to you, just remember a little every day goes a long way....in the beginning your fingers will be very sore, but that goes away with daily practice....and your going to say, I'm never going to learn all this....but believe me in time you will....just take it slow...there's no fast way to learn guitar playing.....a little everyday and in about three months you'll see how it's all starting to come together....in the beginning learn three chords, C, Am, and D keep changing these chords to help you get your fingers ready, this will help to give you those callouses that are required to play without pain.....and show you that in time with patience, and daily work it will all come together....those chords will also teach you how to change smoothly and with confidence....hope this helped !!!!!!!! Also try out these free sites to start with....I believe in a teacher but to get you started look at these sites, there free....and later I'll give you some great sites....

acoustic
because an electrics cost more..and you need an amp
acoustics you can just play
and basses are different from regular guitars
you dont want a bass
just get an acoustic

i think you should get am electric guitar.

I started out with an electric when I was 11. I bought a set online, it came with the electric guitar and amp. The amp was small, but still serves purpose. I personally would choose an electric guitar to start with. it's much easier to play. On an acoustic, the strings are more thicker, and harder to press down on the fret board. It just also depends on the music you wanna play.

For me, electric was easier. :)

six string accoustic is best to start with, no pickups, amplifiers or electronics to worry about, just know that woods shrink and swell depending on climate and that wood warps w/ mistreatment. I.e no leaning the axe in the corner, and don't use it as a shelf. just practice, some start slow or it is like riding a bike, you know after a few hard times it just makes sence. just stick with it.

start basic. with accoustic. it's pretty easy, with a simple sound, as you grow older and more advanced, deal with the other types of guitars, and the different sounds that come along with them.

i know how you feel, i wanna be a singer when i'm older ;)

if you want to play lead buy and electric
i would recommend a squire stratocaster

good guitar for beginners

and good for you for wanting to play lead some day
not that much guitarist start playing for that reason
nowadays its mostly just ryhthem guitar

Definitely start acoustic, but make sure you get a 6-string NYLON one. Steel strings really hurt me when I started playing (I was your age, too). The good thing about nylon strings, also, is that you can play classical and spanish pieces better than with steel strings. I mean, technically, you can still play these pieces with a steel string guitar, but you won't get the same sound effect.
