Position:Home>Performing Arts> Have you ever known someone who was musically inclined, but didn't major in

Question:I sing, and I want to be a music and a theatre major.
But sometimes I want to do something else.
But to me, it feels like if I don't major in music, then I will be wasting my talent.
What do you think?

I've known a few very talented people who didn't major in music and it just about kills me to see that talent go to waste.
There's nothing wrong with choosing another major, but please don't stop doing music. Stay involved somehow in the community, or maybe choose music as a minor. Just don't stop doing music if you choose another career path.
Good luck =)

Actually, I'm in the same boat!! There are two different ways the I think about this (depending on my mood)
1. I will always have music and I will never stop learning about music so not going to music college might be a wise step. Music will always be an option that I can fall back on and it would be smart to have knowledge in another Field.
OR
2. I will attend a liberal arts college. Here, I can major in more than one subject, and they don't both have to relate to music. This is also a smart choice because I will gain experience in another Field while broadening my music knowledge.

Both of these are options for you to consider. I hope that I am a helpful to you in some way with this information, and I hope you find the perfect college and major for yourself!! Good Luck and enjoy college!

ive been a musician for years and played in many bands. ive only played with one music major, and he wasnt any better than anyone else. if your a singer, the only one that can help you is yourself. you can get advice from other singers, but it doesnt take a degree for that. most of the best singers in the world never went to college. either you have it, or you dont. you can be taught technique, but music is really emotions made audible. if you dont have the feel................

Lots of famous musicians either didn't go to college at all, or majored in something other than music. Mick Jagger has a degree in economics. John Lennon was an art student. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr never went to college at all. Eric Clapton was also an art student. I'm sure if you look up biographies of your favorite current singers and musicians on Wikipedia, you'll find that most of them didn't major in music in college either. Majoring in theater and music in college might sound like more fun than majoring in accounting, or nursing, or engineering, but whether it will actually help you succeed in the music industry is, IMO, debatable.

Unless you're looking to become a classical instrumentalist or an opera singer, I'm not entirely sure that a degree in music is necessary. And even then, there are far more people who graduate with performance degrees than there are full-time openings in orchestras and opera companies, and many people with music degrees find themselves teaching private lessons and working part-time jobs in other fields to earn a living while they play part-time for very little money in local community orchestras.

If you major in a field that will provide you with useful employment related skills, you can pursue your music in your spare time and still be able to support yourself until your musical career takes off. Being a starving artist living in a cheap apartment with 3 other roommates and flipping burgers at Micky D's to pay the rent, or living in your parents' basement until you're 30 while you wait for your big break, really ISN'T all its cracked up to be, IMO :-)

Good luck.

I do! I have known many through the years who have never even had a lesson in the performing arts. A few went to Performing Arts High School, a few took private lessons in both acting and singing. There are others that I have known who had a natural ability and talent, and really went with the flow.

The point for you is to go with your gut. You definitely do not have to waste your talent if you don't major in music. You can go after another dream and yet still have your singing.

Why don't you put yourself singing a song, that you know really well (in the your right key and on pitch) and put it on you tube. Then if you want to e-mail me with the Youtube connection I will critique it for you.

My whole life, and it has been a long one, has been in Musical Theater, as a Produce/Director and owner of a Musical Theater Company. Before that I sang with big bands in England, and had my own girls orchestra (that was many years ago).

For the last few years I have taught singing as well as coached. Also I teach acting. My hobby is being in Commercials and doing some film work. You see, there are many, many outlets for you, if you choose not to major in music.

Only major in music if you want to make a career out of it. There are plenty of musicians who want the job security of being an acountant or the salary of a pharmacist. Majoring in music also means taking theory class. It's not all fun mind you. Very few music majors actually go on to be performers mind you. Most who do do not do it as their primary career. Most are teachers. Slash never went to music school, ha.

Yes. I know a guy flute player who is absolutely amazing. He could have gone pro and he knows it. However, he also likes math.

He is a Math major. =P
