Position:Home>Performing Arts> My action on an acoustic guitar is horrid, how can i fix this without taking it

Question:It can be fixed at home, but without more information, it's difficult to give you complete instructions. Has the neck a bow towards or away from the strings? If there is an adjustable truss rod, a bow can be straightened out by turning the truss rod in the proper direction...be CAREFUL doing this...it's not too difficult to overturn a truss rod and damage it if you don't know what you're doing Does the guitar need a fret job? Are there any high or worn frets? What about the nut? Are the string slots the proper depth on the nut? Is there an adjustable bridge? All of these things affect the action and are easily adjustable, but you do need a LITTLE experience. There are some good books available on the 'net that you can use....I suggest one by Dan Erlwine...he has or had a column in Guitar Player mag...he also did a neck re-set on my old Chet Atkins Gretsch....he KNOWS what he's talking about.......good luck!!

You most likely can't fix it on your own.The acoustic guitar has a fixed bridge. You need to take it to a shop.
The good news is it won't cost that much,$30-40 bucks usaully,to replace the strings check and adjust neck, intonation, action.and probably even a good cleaning.

My suggestion. Don't fix it yourself. You'll only make it worse. Go to a store as soon as you finish reading this message. Okay... ready get your guitar and when I say three run out the door like a maniac and drive up to the first music store you see. Ready? 1.......2.......3!

You'll thank me later. :)
