OK First, check out your local music shop. You have a choice of steel or nylon strings, but you will know what he prefers. Find out what is available in your price range (even 2nd hand) and also what deal the shop will do - free gig bag or whatever. Explain the postion to them. Then, as near to Christmas as possible, take the boyfriend to the shop. Tell him what you propose to do and ask him to choose from the ones you have already checked out. Let him try them out and see which one is for him. I know it takes away the element of surprise, but it is the safest way. You can keep it at yours and give it to him on Christmas day or whenever. Hope this helps.

Alvarez is a good intermediate to professional guitar that is reasonably priced. Fender has a couple of models made in China or Japan that are of a good quality and price.

I've been teaching classical guitar for a lot of years...and what I tell everyone who asks....Do Not buy a guitar for anyone...if you want get him a gift certificate to buy one on his own fine....when buying a guitar you have to buy one that suits him, his hands and fingers, and you have to be sure that the sound is what he likes, there's so many variations, for you to go in cold not knowing exactly what he wants is a mistake....the action may be to high for him....or the frets don't suit him....your not spending a lot....have you checked out the cost of guitars...they can be very expensive....all the more reason to have him try it out....you have to be extra careful when buying one that doesn't cost much...if you don't know what your doing you could be buying a piece of junk....I'm sorry for being so negative but I'm sure that you wanted the truth....good luck !!!!!!!!!
