Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I don't like polyphonic instruments and I don't have very strong lungs.

How about one of the instruments in the bowed string family -- violin, viola, cello or bass?

flute i play flute and its awesome!!!

Well, if you're going to restrict yourself that way, you probably want to stick with percussion.

However, you may want to broaden your horizons (go polyphonic, you'll love it!) or your abilities (no one's lungs are very strong to start -- you have to practice! And it's your diaphragm that does the work, not the lungs).

I'd say that you should stick with percussion and/or the string family. I play the viola and it's a really fun instrument which doesn't take too much effort. But stay away from woodwinds like the flute.

French horn!! I play the horn and it is the best instrument out there! When I first started, I didn't have very strong lungs either, but as I practiced, it got easier every day. The horn is a great instrument because it has the most beautiful sound and it is so much fun to play. It isn't a very popular instrument, like the flute, either. If you are looking for a challenge that you will enjoy every waking moment of, the horn is for you! Whatever you choose, good luck!!

OK, you have limited yourself to a small group of instruments:

Percussion
Violin, viola, cello, bass
Acoustic guitar (classical might be too polyphonic for you)
Harmonica
Kazoo

You probably have stronger lungs than you think!!!! PS the diaphragm does NO work whatsoever, you just get better at breath control the longer you play.

Well for any wind instrument it takes time to build up your lung capacity and your diaphram strength. I'm a flute player so naturally I would recommend the flute, but really it comes down to what instrument appeals to you. If you don't want to play a wind instrument you could try percussion or mallets, or even strings. In the percussion area my favorite instrument is the marimba, you can play with up to 3 mallets in each hand! You can still learn how to read music this way. In the strings category my favorite instrument is the cello. It has such a gorgeous and dark sound. But like I said it's really up to you.

Flute or recorders for example. Too many people underrate the recorder these days, it's not only for children!!

Why not percussion? I'm a percussionist, myself. But I'm mostly mallet percussion. I'm improving on my snare drum.
With percussion you don't have to worry about breathing air into your instrument or even have to buy one (unless you want to). If you take up drums (snare, bass, tenors, etc.), all you need is a pair of sticks, a practice pad, and your music. If you take up mallets, you can buy a cheap little Casio keyboard and can pick out your notes right there.
Of course, their is guitar and piano, but percussion gives you a sense of learning how to play in every type of music.
Hope This Helped. :-)
