If you're taking your first guitar class at college, ask the professor what type of guitar to buy. He may have specific requirements.

If not, the best guitar for a beginner is a classical guitar. The nylon strings are easier on uncalloused fingers, and the wider fretboard is more forgiving of inaccurately placed fingers. You can get yourself a relatively cheap one for under $200. If you like playing and want to continue, you can trade up to a better model after your class.

electric, its cooler, its also easier to play, if you want to play acoustic, buy one after you buy an electric because the string are harder to press down so technically its harder than electric

it depends.

Do you want to pursue guitar after the class? are you taking the class just to fulfill your fine art requirement?

My high school guitar class was a nylon string acoustic class. The best thing to get for this kind of class is the kind of guitar you'll be playing in class. If you want to play electric, get an electric. If you want a steel string acoustic, get that, or an acoustic electric. Acoustic electric guitars are just amplified acoustic guitars, they play like acoustic guitars, and are not very well suited if you like to play a lot of songs with distortion.

Electric guitars can be extremely quiet to extremely loud. It depends if you're plugged in and how high the volume is.

Acoustic guitars can never be "turned down" only played quieter. This requires a change in technique which may be ill advised.

SHORT ANSWER.
If you just want to pass the class, get the kind of guitar you'll be playing in class

If you want to play guitar after the class is over, get the kind of guitar that best suits your style of music

EDIT:
I just read another answer on here. No, the best beginning guitar is NOT always a classical. Classical, Steel String Acoustic, and Electric are all different, and saying one is harder than the other is bunk.

it really depends on what your style is.. me its electric or you could always play both

ive never lived in a apartment but i live by people who do call the cops on me and my band for playing to loud.. hilarious
