Pick up some magazines guitar world and total guitar are great... guitarworld.com and totalguitar.com... read and study the lessons. Learn theory, theory involves everything music and gets to the nitty-gritty of whats behind the beauty.

Learn regular chords and then learn bar chords. You will also want to learn scales, as well as strumming and picking skills. If you really want to get hard core, then start getting into music theory, and alternate non E based standard tuning. Throw a capo in, and you're pretty much set to learn how to play just about any song you've ever heard ...

Oh yah ... and if you really want to be a credible musician you'll want to learn how to read real music ... not just tableture.

Learn to READ music and you'll be better off. But you should learn scales within the chords. The chords themselves are made up of notes withing a scale and once you have an understanding of notes and scales you will begin to figure out chords and modified chords. Good Luck and enjoy
