Question:What is that knob on the saxophone for, the one that you can twist off all the way without affecting the playing of the instrument? On my Soprano it is below the strap ring, and on my Alto it is near the neck piece.

Probably it's the one for marching band music - there are special stands that you can attach to the sax there, and then place your music on them, tightening the knob so that it stays in.

It's for the flip folder and lyre. You use it to hold marching band music in a little folder (flip folder). Most bands use them for stand music only. Not for actual halftime show stuff.

It is for a marching band. You buy a lyre and put a flip folder on the lyre with music and pages and your all ready to go preform at halftimes during football games or at the Thanksgiving parade lol

It's the hole for a lyre. A lyre is a little device that you can clip music to so that you don't have to memorize it. Unless you play stands music for a football or basketball game, you'll probably never use it.
