Position:Home>Performing Arts> I want to teach myself how to play piano, what is an excellent book that I can l

Question:I already know all of the notes, and I can play extremely easy songs with only my right hand. I have figured out how to play other songs (again, with one hand) by looking at my vocal music (Big Girls Don't Cry, for instance), and I really want to learn how to play at an intermediate level with two hands. What are some excellent books for this?

I am in 7th grade, and musically inclinded; if that helps.

Dear Jessica,

First of all, please allow me to advise you what you should do,
before taking piano lessons.

1. You must find out if your neighbors agree that you install
and use a musical instrument, in your home/apartment; and,
between what hours. You should avoid, with any price, to dis-
turb the public (peace and) quiet.
If one of your neighbors decides to make a Complaint against
you, your parents would have to pay a high penalty!

2. You have to ask your Mom and your Dad if they afford to
buy you a good piano. Even if you are an absolute beginner,
my advice is to choose the best/highest quality instrument
you can afford. I am not talking about a more than 100,000
Dollars concert piano (like a Steinway, or a Boesendorfer,
for example). But you should have prepared at least a tenth
from the above mentioned amount, if you want an instrument
worthy of you (it can be even one build by Yamaha, or Kawai).

Even if you intend to take lessons in a public school, which
already detains pianos, you must also use a piano, at home--
be it a "keyboard" (electronic organ), or a music synthesizer.
[The later has the advantage that it can be interfaced with a
PC.] You have to train yourself almost daily, if you want to be
in "good shape".

3. From what I know, you are already taking ballet lessons and
singing lessons. You have to make your homeworks. You have
to help your Mom, at home. You have to chat with your quite
numerous friends. You have to dedicate some of your valuable
time, to various forums. You have to give answers, on Yahoo!
You have to help your little sister. You have other passions, too.
Time is more valuable than money!

Well, don't you think that it is a little too much, even for a very
endowed girl like you? Will you be able to do all these AND to
study the pianistic art?

Nevertheless, I have nothing against your decision. It is suited
for a girl who wishes to improve her education; for a girl, in
general. I must say that I admire you!

In the followings, I will indicate you several links to websites
where you can take free on-line piano lessons:

5. http://www.pianolessonreviews.com/

For now, I think that these are enough. You can send me an
email, if you need more specific help.

You can contact a piano teacher, from your area, if you wish.
But, my advise is to improve your musical education, first.
Id Est, to learn about the music history, composers, acoustics,
the theory of sound, electronic musical devices, scores and so
on. The (basic) musical theory can very much help you to
improve your interpretation technique.

Hi , there are so many .
I think that the best thing you can do is to make a lot of sight reading of music you really like .Maybe starting with some easy sheet music , disney type songs and slowly move to more pop or classical sheet music.
If you want to learn the main thing is to be playing all you can (even if it is 5 minutes in a day )
maybe you can use the berklee keyboard method
Good luck with your music playing !!!!!

I use Alfreds Basic Piano series. I've played since I was like 5 but I suck haha. I'm on level 4, but I didn't start with this series and I have other books too like this crappy Classics one thats so hard ''/
